QuickBooks Pro 2006 - Shitty Out of Box Experience

I just installed QuickBooks Pro 2006. The installation went okay but when I tried to start QuickBooks for the first time, I ran into problems. The splash screen came on for about a half a second and then the program closed. I tried it again and then same thing happened.

I figured if Intuit was a typical software company, they would have put some error message into a log file. Sure enough, I found a log file at “C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks Pro\QBWIN.log”. Inside the log I found several “missing module” messages:

=================================================

Looking at the messages, I noticed an obvious error with a part of the path that was duplicated: “Intuit\QuickBooks\\Intuit\QuickBooks”. I googled for a solution and didn’t find one. Then I checked Intuit’s so-called “knowledge base” and still did not find a solution.

That’s when I noticed the batch file “C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks Pro\reboot.bat”. I opened the file and noticed the comment “Post-reboot registration commands, for QuickBooks 2003″ at the top of the file. Then I noticed a whole bunch of calls to “regsvr32″ — for example:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\regsvr32 /s “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\addinmgr2.dll”

Obviously, that batch file was supposed to run automatically the first time I rebooted after installing QuickBooks. Now I know what you’re thinking but let me assure you that I DID reboot after installation. QuickBooks just effed up and didn’t run the batch file.

Anyway, I manually ran the batch file and it fixed the problem. I was able to run QuickBooks.

If you have the same problem and this blog post helps you, please leave a comment.

Cheers!

cheers mate! helped me solve a prob moving qb 2003 from one machine to another without install disks – lost them a long time ago!

I now have the same problem as you, but don’t know what you mean by running the batch file. Where is it located and how do I get it to run? Is it in the registry? Thank you! Todd

  • Joe

Todd, the batch file you need to run is located at:
    C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks Pro\reboot.bat

Just browse to that file with “My Computer” or “Explorer” and run it by double-clicking it.

Many thanks Joe. That did the trick! It is scary to think how such small lines of code can stop one dead in one’s tracks and muck up what you’re doing.

That worked! Thanks so much for taking time to blog about this issue.

Thank you. This post totally saved my ass just now.

You’re the foist “make sense” support I’ve found over the last three days.
I’ve been using QB2006 (reluctantly) for 6 months now. Until Friday, it ran no problems, then it started forcibly rebooting computer. No help online, especially from Intuit. Funny thing is, I have it installed on Laptop and same company file works. Uninstalled three times and reinstalled. Went through all suggestions QB offered. Going to try a repair and run batch file manually. Thanks For suggestion.

Wellll, not even that seemed to help. Made all of QB’z suggestions as far as permissions. QB log still reports missing module in log and still persists I need Power user or Administrator rights. if any one has answer let me know…

Five months after your original post, and a full day wasted, I am soooo glad that you posted your experience. I have paid full price for this product, used it for almmost a year, then the hard drive crashed. Tried to reinstall, but had the same problem. That sad part is that Intuit offers support for thirty days only. I wonder why don’t they post this on their websit? Thanks again

Joe, you are the man!! I have had this problem since 2006. I just left it alone and worked around it using other means. You should see how many people in the QuickBooks Forums who are having the same problem. I copied and pasted your post in several discussions and posted Joe’s Bit Bucket’s address as the source. There are many people there who are pissed off that Intuit has not given them a solution. Just the same old “deinstall and reinstall” bullsh!t. And I’m talking posts as old as when I first looked there for a solution in 2006.

  • Joe

    Steven, you’re very welcome!

  • John

    Yeeeha Thanks

I had this problem with Quickbooks 2007 even though the user was a Domain Admin and local admin. Once I manually ran the batch file like you mentioned it worked just as described. Thanks and great find.

I could just kiss you! After many days and nights of tears and frustration, I happened upon your site and presto your batch file instructions worked! You are a lifesaver. Thank you!

  • Suzanne

THANK YOU! After 3 1/2 hours of playing with this one silly program, I caught a link to this from the QuickBooks forum.

    You have saved the office!

  • OMGosh–I found this posting thru problem QB postings. I know nothing about computers, but I had to try something. With this posting being several years ago and I am running QB Pro 2010 I gave it a try and YAHOO & THANK GOODNESS. After worrying for 2 days, it worked and I didn’t even have to uninstall. I will for sure add you guys in my favorites. THANKS A BUNCH!!!!!

  • Candace, I’m glad I could help!
