How to Upgrade the Memory on a Samsung NC10 Netbook

Before you buy your new RAM, you’ll need to know what type of RAM the NC10 uses. While the NC10 user manual has a decent section on how to upgrade the RAM, it doesn’t give you the exact specifications. The only specification I could find in the manual was this rather terse one: “DDR2 SODIMM”. Unfortunately, that’s not precise enough for buying purposes.

What can you do? Well, you can google something like “Samsung NC10 memory specifications” but you’ll be sifting through a lot of hits to find the information. A quicker approach is to use Crucial’s Memory Advisor tool. With that tool, you enter the manufacturer, product line and model of your netbook and it tells you the model and specification of Crucial RAM you should buy. In my case my exact NC10 model number, NC10-KA05CA, did not appear in the list of models.

All was not lost, however, because Crucial also has another tool called System Scanner. I downloaded System Scanner, ran it on my system (am I too trusting?), and it spit out the following report:

If you look at the second page of System Scanner output, you’ll notice that it recommended Crucial part number CT909595. Unfortunately, my favorite computer store, ncix.com, did not carry that specific part at the time. Of course, I could have ordered the part directly from Crucial but I prefer dealing with my local guys at ncix.com.

Luckily, the above output also showed the exact memory specification I needed: DDR2 PC2-6400, CL=6, unbuffered, NON-ECC, DDR2-800. I looked up those specs on ncix’s site and found they were selling this Crucial part number with compatible specs: CT25664AC800. See Figure 3. That’s the RAM I ended up buying, for around CAD$35.

With the RAM purchased, it’s time to install it.
